HGS Calling all Young Authors

For the past two years at the HGS Symposiums held in Wyoming and Massachusetts, HGS formally supported a Young Author competition. Our winners the last two years were Simon Boone(2014), with a paper titled “Performance of Flexible Debris Flow Barriers in a Narrow Canyon” and Cory Rinehart(2015) with a paper titled “High Quality H20, Utilizing Horizontal Drains for Landslide Stabilization.” Our committee was thoroughly impressed with the quality of all the Young Author papers, presentations and candidates the last two years, and it is clear that the future of HGS is in good hands. We would like to think that any of the previous Young Author participants would agree that participating was a valued experience and they would encourage you to do so this year.

For this year’s HGS which will be held in Colorado in July, the abstract deadline is quickly approaching. We are still in need of abstracts and we are definitely interested in seeing some strong participation again from our Young Author’s. So whether you are a Young Author, or just as importantly, you know a Young Author, we encourage you to help get the abstracts in soon. Please see the Highway Geology Symposium for further details about the guidelines for the competition. Based on the ranking, the Local Committee may provide up to three (3) awards to Young Authors. Awards will consist of:

a. Complimentary Full Registration for the selected Young Authors to attend and present their paper at that years HGS.
b. A check award in the amount of $1000 to the top ranked author, $750 to the second and $500 to the third ranked author. As noted above, there is no guarantee that an award will be presented, but three (3) is established as the maximum. This award is intended as an award or scholarship and is not necessarily established to cover travel costs associated with attending the Symposium. The Young Author will be notified of the award in advance of the Symposium and each Young Author Award winner must attend and present their paper to receive the award.
c. The Young Author(s) will be acknowledged and final awards presented at the Banquet. Additionally, Young Author Award winners will be listed in the Proceedings and Website and this list will be updated each year to reflect current and past recipients of the award.
d. A newly created Young Author plaque will be presented to the top ranked Young Author each year.

We look forward to seeing your abstract by February 29th!!
